The Cambridge School of Weston (CSW) focused its annual Social Justice Day on Gun Violence and Legislation. Working with the event coordinators, Grassroots4GVP helped organize and facilitate six of the eleven workshops offered. Thanks to the Ohio Mom whose daughter teaches at CSW for asking Grassroots4GVP volunteers to participate.
The day, attended by the school’s 300 students and its faculty, started with an inspiring keynote address by Parkland survivor and activist David Hogg, followed by two workshop sessions. Erin Kennedy and Julie Benotti gave a workshop on how students can reduce preventable gun violence by bringing a secure storage resolution to their school and hometowns.
Lynn Grilli worked with students to write Survivor Care Cards, with sessions coordinated by Amy Clark. In both sessions the students were very engaged, passionate, and respectful of the process. Their beautiful and thoughtful cards will be forwarded to Everytown and distributed across the country.
Rina Schneur talked about Gun Safety Legislation in Massachusetts. In addition, there were sessions from strategic partners Lovern Gordon of Love Life Now on domestic violence, and Toy Burton of DeeDee’s Cry on suicide prevention.
CSW was honored to welcome David Hogg to campus to deliver the keynote address at our 2024 Michael H. Feldman ’67 Social Justice Day. This year’s topic, as voted on by the CSW student body, was Gun Violence and Legislation.
“Because we had the audacity to hope, we were able to make change,” David shared, telling students, “you have the power to challenge the status quo.”
After David’s remarks, community members had the chance to ask questions like, “Do you believe meaningful change is possible within our current governmental structure?” and “How do you respond in the moment when people try to shut you down?”
The rest of the day was dedicated to group workshops led by special guests. Workshops offered included “American Gun Rights Under the Second Amendment,” “Advocating & Testimony Writing,” and “Gun Safety Legislation in Massachusetts.” Full workshop descriptions and speaker bios from the series are available on the CSW Social Justice Day Landing Page.
